Newfoundland Salmon Flies … and how to tie them

Books available through Breakwater Books

Through the years I’ve enjoyed numerous outdoor experiences which stuck in my mind as being truly enjoyable or memorable — and worth sharing with other outdoor lovers.  The book consists of about half hunting short stories and half fishing short stories, from a simple “boil-up” at streamside during a fishing trip to sitting in a tree stand hunting black bears with a bow.

In 1990 I decided to pursue my dream of building a fishing lodge at an undeveloped river and lake in the remote Mealy Mountains of Labrador.  For more than a decade I operated the site I dubbed “Awesome Lake” for its unbelievable natural beauty and giant Eastern brook trout.  This is the story of that adventure, from its beginning to the operation’s eventual sale in 2001.

So You Want to Be an Outfitter

Tales of Christmas

For many years I hosted a Creative Writing forum on the Internet through Sympatico.  This book is a collection of short stories, both fact and fiction, written by some of our “regular” visitors in a core group we called “Writers Across Canada Online (WACO)”.  I made three contributions to this very entertaining book as well as acting as chief editor.  A seasonal favorite.

Books for Sale

In this book I write about fly fishing for Atlantic salmon, Eastern brook trout and Arctic char, all of which are primary species in Newfoundland and Labrador.  The techniques are proven through years of experience and the tips would be helpful for beginner or expert in learning some simple yet often-overlooked ways to raise and catch these fish.

Bill Bennett - Pioneer Bush Pilot and Outfitter

When Newfoundland Labrador entered the Canadian Federation in 1949, roads were few and far between.  Bill Bennett, a brash young adventurer with a passion for flying, bought a small airplane and soon built Gander Aviation, one of the most successful airline companies in Newfoundland and Labrador. Gander Aviation flew freight, supplies, fuel, mail, medicine and people into and out of remote settlements in all types of weather.  This is the amazing story of Bill Bennett, adventurer, aviator, and outfitter, as told by his friends and family who lived it with him.
